Go Cowboy Chic This Summer (No Lasso Required)

Ralph Lauren

Think boots are just for the cooler months? Think again. While we often associate hardware-clad boots with the fall, this summer, we’re pairing them with our favorite trimmed cut-off shorts, frilly dresses and a whole lot of flare. Even if you’re more of a city slicker than Billy the Kid, these looks will have you feeling as cool as John Wayne, only much more stylish. They’re all about the details with spurs, fringe, and ruffles aplenty. Sure, these styles would fit in perfectly at your local saloon, but they’re never too costumey—all made with the luxurious detail that you’ve come to expect from South Coast Plaza’s roster of designers.

THE WESTERN EDIT

Fringe Benefits

When done right, fringe offers the perfect blend of boho and rock ‘n roll—for a look that’s feminine and cool, with a vintage twist. While fringe-trimmed jackets are the most obvious way to rock this look, we’re loving Coach’s 1964 Fringe Bag—which just so happens to fit regulatory concert venue size requirements. Made in buttery, glovetanned leather, the avocado green color feels like a cool alternative to a traditional neutral hue. If you’re looking for a fringe that feels a little more glam, try Maje’s rhinestone denim shorts. With these loose-fitting shorts, the accessories are practically built in. For a fringe that somehow manages to be minimalist, Sandro’s asymmetrical maxi dress is the move—quite literally, as it moves when you do.

Classically Country

These western-inspired styles are the most literal take on this look. Take, for instance, Maison Margiela’s Tabi western boot, which is designed with the brand’s signature split seam next to the toe. From afar, this style looks like a traditional cowboy boot, but up close, it’s all about high fashion. Other designers, like Givenchy, Gianvito Rossi and Burberry have their own versions of the country-inspired leather boot—and we love them all. Next, working our way up, we love pairing any of these boots with a frilly, feminine top. Chloe’s ruffled silk-Georgette blouse is one of our favorites of the season, offering a big dose of femininity. Missoni’s zig zag ruffled midi dress is a great option, too. Now top either of these pieces off with Michael Kors Collection’s Marisa gold-tone and leather ring belt and you’ve got yourself a classic country look.

Prints, Please!

One way to nod to the western aesthetic is with playful prints, reminiscent of those you might see on a bandana—with paisleys and more. Take, for instance, Balmain’s paisley and mini monogram printed silk shirt. It pairs a tailored collar with a more relaxed fit—perfect for the cowgirl in your life. However, if you’re more focused on dressing the cowboy in your life, we’re big fans of Berluti’s linen and cotton printed short sleeves shirt. With mother-of-pearl buttons, it’s easy to see where this fun shirt draws its inspiration from.
